wanjinas

so these things are wanjinas and there are more and more of them around. i'd love to know who's doing them. here is a pertinent bit of info "... the Wanjina rock paintings and the living tradition that is being keep "fresh" through "touching" up the old rock paintings and creating new "modern" expressions of the Wanjina - "eternal manifestations of the sacred life force ... the supernatural ancestors" of the local aborigines (including the Worrorra, Ngarinyin and the Wunambal")

Hey how did you find out about these?

I have finally seen one - on a freeway overpass. On the Kwinana freeway heading south, near the South Terrace exit.

I wonder what the message is?

Thanks for the link : )

a friend rang me from her car on the way home from work on friday night to tell me about that one! i saw it on saturday afternoon, and by the time i drove past again on sunday morning it was gone. alas.

wanjinas are part of the dreaming of aboriginal tribes in the kimberley. apparently they can get touched up and re-done only by particular people.

the wanjinas created the country, and are closely associated with clouds and rain.

my next job is to read this book;
"Keeping the Wanjinas fresh" by Kimberely Wanjina artist & carer Donny Woolagoodja and anthropologist Valda Blundell, published by Fremantle arts Centre Press.

i'll get back to you if i learn anything interesting!

Cool

The ones on the freeway overpass bridges are still there. I even saw them driving home last night.
There is one facing north and one facing south...

A bit of an effort to get a photo though.
